Don La Greca criticizes Chris Russo for his harsh comments about the Mets and Gary Cohen

Controversy Over Alonso’s Record-Setting Home Run

There’s quite a stir happening.

Don La Greca, an ESPN NY Radio host, expressed his hope that Chris “Mad Dog” Russo will ease up on his criticism regarding the celebration surrounding Pete Alonso’s recent home run, which broke the Mets’ franchise record and was also a significant moment for Gary Cohen’s commentary.

Alonso made history by hitting his 253rd career home run off Braves pitcher Spencer Strider at Citi Field, surpassing Daryl Strawberry to set a new franchise record. In the moment, Cohen exclaimed, “Here it is!”

Russo didn’t hold back in his criticism of both the Mets and Cohen, who celebrated enthusiastically, especially considering the team’s recent slump, having lost 10 out of their last 12 games after a win on Tuesday.

Russo, a former WFAN star now with SiriusXM, remarked, “And I love Gary Cohen, but have you heard his call? This was over the top.” He suggested that the celebration was premature, pointing out, “We can’t even agree on what constitutes a home run record with this kind of nonsense popping up.”

His remarks continued, “I adore Gary, but I hate to do this. Calling him a ‘polar bear on an iceberg’? That’s a bit much!”

Not everyone shares Russo’s perspective. La Greca, now the TV voice of the New Jersey Devils, advised Russo to steer clear of commenting on Mets affairs.

“This is a Mets moment,” La Greca stated during “Don, Hearn & Rosenberg.” He added, “If you’re a Yankees or Red Sox fan, maybe this isn’t your audience.” He emphasized, “This was a Met broadcast for Met fans discussing a Met record.”

He also pointed out that differing opinions likely stem from team loyalties, saying, “If you’re not a Mets fan, maybe you won’t see it as a big deal. For those of us who appreciate the legacy of Daryl Strawberry and Pete Alonso, it’s significant.”

La Greca further illustrated his point by comparing Russo’s remarks to someone crashing a private meeting. “It feels like someone entering the He-Man Woman Haters Club to comment—you’re not invited, so why bother caring?”

Alonso later hit another home run during the game against the Braves, a 413-foot shot that extended the Mets’ lead to 11-5, marking his 254th career homer.

The Mets are now looking to secure a win in their three-game series against Atlanta on Thursday night, which would be their first series victory since sweeping the Giants from July 25 to 27.
