Florida Establishes Second Detention Facility for Unauthorized Migrants, 'Deportation Depot'

New Immigration Detention Center Announced in Florida

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Thursday the impending opening of a second illegal immigration detention center, referred to as the “deportation depot,” citing immediate demand for such facilities.

The announcement took place during a press conference in Baker County, where DeSantis explained that while they initially considered a camp for the detention center, they discovered an unused part of the Baker Correctional Facility. This site already contained much of the necessary infrastructure, saving the state millions. He also pointed out that Camp Branding’s runway could not accommodate larger immigrant flights, making the proximity to Lake City Airport advantageous for the new facility.

“Today, I’m announcing our endorsement and the soon-to-be opening of this new illegal immigration detention and deportation facility here in North Florida,” he stated.

DeSantis clarified that the purpose of this facility is not to detain individuals indefinitely, but rather to expedite the return of undocumented immigrants to their home countries. He emphasized the state’s commitment to this approach following the last presidential election.

“We’ve reached a point where we need more capacity than what we have in South Florida,” DeSantis noted, adding that many areas of the Baker facility were not currently being utilized for their intended state activities.

The governor mentioned that this new site is advantageous since it requires less modification than similar facilities, thanks to its existing infrastructure, which helps cut costs compared to building new ones. He said the second location could house over 1,300 detainees and would offer similar services as the current detention facility.

“The expenses will be covered by a federal partner, and with Lake City Airport just a short distance away, this transition will be handled quickly,” he remarked, reassuring that the facility would be operational “soon.”

“While we’re not rushing, we’re dedicated to getting it done efficiently. This is a priority for people in our country,” he continued.

Kevin Guthrie, the executive director of emergency management for Florida, also spoke, highlighting that the opening of this new facility signifies the successful operation of the existing Southern facility and the state’s ongoing commitment to managing illegal immigration.

“This center will act as a northern base supporting the governor’s aim of maintaining law and order while ensuring the safety of Florida families,” he added.

The center will offer three meals a day, 24/7 access to medical facilities, and recreational yards, both indoor and outdoor. “They’ll have access to legal and spiritual support and will even be able to do laundry. Everything they require under federal or state law for detention facilities will be provided,” Guthrie affirmed. “It’s a permanent setup, allowing our team to get operational quickly and efficiently.”
