A Milwaukee Brewers fan made quite an unusual call to 911 recently. He was dissatisfied after not receiving the free burger he expected from a local restaurant, which has a promotion tied to the Brewers’ winning streak. This took place during a national emergency situation, prompting the police to summon a SWAT team to deal with it.
The fan reported that he didn’t get the burger promised to him as part of the establishment’s offer during the Brewers’ impressive 12-game winning streak. On Wednesday, the Brewers defeated the Pirates 12-5, marking their twelfth consecutive win.
“So, he called 911 because they wouldn’t give him his free burger while the game was still ongoing. They told him to wait, but I’m not sure if he is still waiting,” a local news outlet noted.
The interesting background here is that George Webb’s restaurants have a long-running promotion that doles out free burgers when the Brewers win 12 games in a row. This tradition started back in the 1940s when George Webb, the founder, made a bold prediction about the team.
The Brewers first hit this milestone in 1987, resulting in a huge giveaway of burgers. The restaurant reported that it had handed out an astounding number of them, totaling 168,194 after three days.
Then, in 2018, the team achieved this feat again, and the restaurant distributed another 90,000 free burgers along with a million vouchers for future redemption.
This latest round of promotions comes after the Brewers swept the Pirates in a series and also won against teams like the Mets, Braves, and Nationals. Excitement was high, and word was that the promotion would officially be announced the next day, leading to some anxious fans.
Amidst this buzz, it seems some fans tried to snag their burgers before the game had actually concluded, but the restaurant hadn’t established a clear time for rewards.
As fans eagerly await their chance to enjoy the promotion without spending a dime, the Brewers are about to embark on an eight-game road trip, starting with the Reds and then taking on the Cubs.
Currently, they hold a significant 6.5-game lead with an impressive record, aiming for a strong position as they eye home-field advantage for the World Series.
