Backlash Over DeSantis’ Report on Veteran Executions
On Wednesday, The Daily Beast faced significant criticism after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis released a report titled “absolute hospitality.” This report stated that the state is under scrutiny for its execution practices, particularly concerning death row inmates convicted of serious crimes such as murder and rape.
The Daily Beast reported that veterans are urging DeSantis to halt these executions, expressing concerns about the deaths of fellow service members. Some veterans feel betrayed, as it was mentioned that DeSantis has faced backlash from his peers, with accusations of having executed five veterans this year alone. The article emphasized that Florida is, or claims to be, the “most veteran-friendly state” in America.
One of the veterans quoted in the article, Kennial Patterson, described the situation, saying, “They all dedicated a part of their lives to protect the country.” The publication’s sensational headline even included the term “Backstabber” in bold red lettering.
Support for Veterans Facing Foreclosure
In another context, legislative changes were signed by Trump aimed at assisting veterans in avoiding foreclosure through partial payment options.
The report noted DeSantis’s service in the U.S. Navy, mentioning that over 130 veterans had penned letters appealing to him to stop executing fellow soldiers. However, the article did not provide specifics on the veterans who had faced execution or give details of their crimes.
Interestingly, the only veteran explicitly mentioned in connection with a crime was Jeffrey Hutchinson, who was executed for the murder of his girlfriend and her three children.
Critical Response to the Report
When The Daily Beast’s article was shared on social media, it garnered critiques, including a note pointing out that the publication had previously defended another case without providing context. Two other veterans named had been convicted of heinous crimes, including the murder of an 8-year-old girl, yet their backgrounds went unaddressed in the report.
Alex Lanfranconi, DeSantis’s Communications Director, weighed in, asserting, “The simple trick to avoiding executions in Florida is not to kill people.”
This article prompted a wave of discontent across various platforms, and The Daily Beast had not replied to inquiries from digital news sources as of the time of reporting.
