Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel’s Father Announces Candidacy for Congress
Reports indicate that Theodis Daniel, the father of 13-year-old Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel—who became an honorary member of the Secret Service after a ceremony with President Donald Trump—plans to run for the congressional seat of Texas’ 18th district.
As shared with a news outlet, Theodis expressed his eagerness to represent the district. He described himself as an everyday person rather than a seasoned politician. “I’m just a regular dude trying to make it,” he said, highlighting his role as a single father and a disabled veteran.
“I don’t call myself a politician,” he stated. “I’m a public servant first, because my duty is to the people.”
Theodis emphasized his commitment to the district, vowing to work tirelessly for its residents. He mentioned his campaign focuses on law enforcement, safety, healthcare, and education—issues that mirror his family’s daily struggles.
“I want to run because I feel like everything that my son and I have been doing for the last six years or so, we have brought joy to people’s lives and gave them hope,” he explained.
He criticized the current state of the district, suggesting that the residents feel misled and are ready for genuine improvements. Theodis also promised to limit his terms if elected, voicing concerns about politicians becoming complacent.
“Sometimes, when you marinate meat, you kind of ruin it. Some people just wear out their welcome,” Theodis remarked, drawing an analogy to the comfort politicians can develop in power.
In late May, the White House reported that DJ, who was diagnosed with brain and spine cancer in 2018 and was given five months to live, is currently facing three new tumors.
During a joint session of Congress on March 4th, DJ was honored by President Trump, who formally enacted his position as an honorary protector.
“Tonight, DJ, we’re going to do you the biggest honor of them all,” Trump declared, inviting the new Secret Service director to make DJ an agent of the United States Secret Service.
The teen is nearing his goal of being sworn in by 1,000 law enforcement agencies across the country—an achievement that would break a Guinness World Record. DJ already holds several records, including those for “the most keys to the city” and “most proclamation days.”
