Debate Sparked by Viral Parenting Technique
Four parents from Oregon, Katie and Dustin Maletic, gained attention on social media after sharing a video that has stirred discussions about parenting methods.
In the clip, Dustin’s 9-year-old stepson, Tommy, was told to “cool down” and perform push-ups and squats as a disciplinary action. This came after he had a conversation with his father about how to speak respectfully to his mother. Tommy listened and ultimately apologized.
Dustin, a corrections officer, ended the encounter with an embrace, expressing his love for Tommy. Reactions to his approach were mixed; some praised him, while others were concerned about using exercise as discipline.
Pediatrician Dr. Dyan Hes described the method as “silly punishment” in an interview, suggesting that physical exercise should not be associated with negative consequences. She emphasized that such activities should have positive associations, particularly for children.
Conversely, educational psychologist Dr. Michelle Bolva offered a different viewpoint, noting that Dustin’s calm response appeared appropriate, but she expressed concern about potentially exposing children to “public shame” through social media.
During an interview, the Maletic family explained that their intention behind using fitness is not about punishment. Katie remarked, “I never like to say, ‘We’re punishing you’ because you’re in the wrong,” focusing instead on using the situation as a learning opportunity for self-control and emotional regulation.
Dustin added, “We try to connect inappropriate behavior with its consequences. If you can’t control how you act, then physical activity can help show you that you are indeed in control.” He reflected on the importance of behaving appropriately in various life scenarios.
The Maletics shared that their eldest son often prefers jogging or walking to process his emotions before discussing things with his parents. Katie noted that even their daughter uses physical activity to center herself before addressing conflicts.
Fitness has become a cherished aspect of their family life. For them, it’s more than just a routine; it’s a bonding experience. As Katie explained, “They feel better and share openly when they work out together. It’s a win for us.”
Recognizing that discipline varies by child and situation, Katie highlighted the importance of responding thoughtfully as parents. Their philosophy centers around not just raising happy children, but preparing them for adulthood. She stated, “I think it’s more crucial to focus on how our kids can manage life as adults than just keeping them comfortable now.”
For other parents, Katie suggested that using physical activities as a discipline can be effective, especially when twinned with open communication and a clear emotional connection to the behavior and its consequences. They have also addressed the backlash from posting their methods online, clarifying that they sought Tommy’s consent before sharing the video, which he hoped would gain wide attention.
