Giants Defensive Line Shows Strength in Joint Practice with Jets
Kayvon Thibodeaux is confident that the Giants’ defensive line had an edge over the Jets’ offensive line during their recent joint practices.
When asked for his assessment of Jets quarterback Justin Fields, Thibodeaux found it challenging. The actions from Tuesday at Flowham Park and again on Wednesday with the Giants made it hard to provide a fair analysis.
“I think it’s tough for quarterbacks right now,” he noted. “Especially with pressure from guys like me, [Brian] Burns, [Dexter Lawrence], [Chauncey Golston], and [Rakeem Nunez-Roches]. Fields had to scramble and manage a lot, so I wouldn’t say I could give a complete evaluation. Maybe it’s something you need to see for yourself.”
According to reports, the performance of the Jets’ offensive line during this practice was less than impressive, allowing four sacks on Wednesday.
Burns, Lawrence, Thibodeaux, and rookie Abdul Carter have noticeably dominated the Giants’ training camp.
Thibodeaux remarked that every play felt like a “race to the quarterback.” Over the two days, he believed they successfully disrupted the potential rhythm of the field.
Coach Brian Daboll, when questioned about whether the starters would participate in the next preseason game, kept his cards close to his chest. He mentioned that the outcome of the joint practices wouldn’t heavily influence his final decisions.
“I won’t say it will affect that,” Daboll stated. “We’re going to make decisions based on what we think is best. There’s simply no substitute for tackling, or for creating space in the pocket. Being a quarterback means you have to feel that pressure.”
Defensive back Paulson Adebo, who faced off against Malik Nabers over the summer, praised Nabers’ “elite” abilities and welcomed the challenge of competing against him.
“Regardless of age, he’s doing things that, well, don’t really depend on how long you’ve been in the league,” Adebo commented. “He controls his routes effectively and knows how to make plays happen.”
Daboll also had no updates regarding Nabers’ toe injury, which has kept him sidelined since last Wednesday.
Considered a potential draft option for the Jets in 2022, Thibodeaux had been a top prospect, but it didn’t seem he would be joining Gang Green. After his pre-draft visit, he felt exhausted and didn’t participate as much as he could have, leading him to think, “Maybe they shouldn’t draft me.”
