Mike Vrabel Joins the Fray During Practice Altercation
During a joint practice session between the Patriots and the Vikings on Thursday, Mike Vrabel, the head coach, made headlines when he jumped into the fray to help break up a fight. It was quite a scene, and while he seemed relatively unshaken in the footage, he did spend some time on the ground before the players were finally separated.
Typically, you’d think a coach wouldn’t get physically involved in a scuffle like that, but here comes Vrabel, a former Pro Bowl linebacker, doing just that. This isn’t the first time either; it’s actually his second preseason involving such a brawl.
Reports from Masslive indicate that a similar incident happened during a previous practice with another team, where Vrabel left with a bloodied face after attempting to break up the fight.
ESPN later mentioned that he was seen with an ice pack on his cheek post-incident. It’s a bit surprising, right? Coaches usually stay clear of the chaos, but there he was, right in the middle of it.
Interestingly enough, Vrabel celebrated his 50th birthday on the same day, earning compliments from players for the energetic atmosphere and culture he promotes within the Patriots organization. Quarterback Drake May shared his thoughts: “That’s the foundation we’re building on, and it all starts with our head coach. When we’re out on the field, we bring it every day with that mentality. I really appreciate that.”
Also noteworthy, the Patriots took some time on Thursday to celebrate Vrabel’s milestone birthday—a mixed bag of events for sure.
New England brought Vrabel on board in January as a replacement for Jerod Mayo after a rough season that concluded with a 4-13 record. In a press conference back in May, Vrabel made it clear that he wasn’t focused on past failures. “Someone asked me if I was worried about last season. Why would I care about that? I’m looking forward to what’s coming—today, tomorrow, and beyond. We’re all about making this work.”
