It’s hard to predict how many games Joel Embiid will actually play this season.
The standout center for the 76ers has been plagued by numerous health issues since entering the league and is reportedly unsure about being ready for training camp starting on October 1st.
“I think there are a lot of decisions to be made before we even get there, regarding whether he’s fit for training camp,” said 76ers coach Nick Nurse.
However, Nurse seems to have taken a more optimistic view of Embiid’s situation, especially after some concerning early reports about his health.
“Our main focus is ensuring he’s healthy enough to play at his best,” said Nurse. “Overall, I’ve heard positive things. I know he’s putting in a lot of effort, and things appear to be looking up.”
Earlier in July, there were concerns about the 31-year-old’s future in the league, with some suggesting that he might sense his career is winding down.
“I think Joel might be aware that his time is limited,” commented Keith Pompei from the Philadelphia Inquirer. “It’s difficult to explain to others what he endures, as you often don’t share the extent of your pain… It seems Joel realizes that, while it might not be this season, the end is approaching.”
Embiid also voiced his frustrations to ESPN back in July regarding his ongoing struggles with injuries.
Last season, he participated in just 19 games, marking the lowest total of any season in which he has had a significant impact.
“Every year, I find myself wondering, ‘Why?'” Embiid said, reflecting on his injury struggles during a pivotal time in his career.
“I can’t say for sure that I can do this again… I feel like I can’t endure another moment of this,” he shared about his nighttime treatment sessions.
Throughout his 11-year career since being drafted in 2014, Embiid has spent almost half of that time on the sidelines, missing a total of 452 games.
Looking ahead, he has a substantial contract, owed $193 million over the next three years, including player options for the 2028-29 season.
Last year, the 76ers struggled significantly in his absence, finishing with a disappointing 24-58 record amid widespread injuries.
