Hakeem Jeffries urged to hold back on Zohran Mamdani: 'It's a valid concern'

Jeffries Avoids Commenting on Mamdani’s Mayoral Candidacy

House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries has once again chosen not to weigh in on Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate for New York City Mayor.

Despite his growing popularity, Mamdani hasn’t received support from Jeffries or many other New York Democrats. Critics, including former Governor Andrew Cuomo, have pointed out the contradiction in Mamdani’s situation, now living in a rent-controlled apartment while advocating for affordability in the city.

Cuomo remarked, “Last night, somewhere in New York City, a single mother and her children slept in a homeless shelter for you, the councillors. [Zohran Mamdani] He’s occupying her rent-controlled apartment.” He further emphasized the pressing issue of affordability, stating that “millions of low-income New Yorkers need this apartment and such an apartment.” His concerns about wealthy individuals occupying rent-controlled apartments raise questions about the fairness of the current system.

Many political analysts see Mamdani’s platform centered around affordability as a key to his appeal. Unlike his opponent, Mamdani consistently pushes for rent freezes for low-income tenants and has even highlighted his own housing circumstances.

Even with these criticisms, Jeffries opted not to publicly criticize the front-running Democrats. Asked whether he thinks Mamdani should reside in a rent-controlled apartment, Jeffries remarked, “It’s a matter for state lawmakers and the state government to resolve.”

The CNBC host pressed further, acknowledging that individuals like Mamdani might not be the typical recipients of rent subsidies. “This is a significant question regarding affordability in the city. Should these rent-controlled apartments go to individuals who genuinely need them?” the host posed.

In response, Jeffries stated, “This is a legitimate issue and the Mamdani Campaign will have to deal with it.”
