Denzel Washington’s Take on the Oscars
Denzel Washington has stepped away from the typical Hollywood mindset, openly confessing his indifference towards the Oscars.
There’s a peculiar obsession in Hollywood surrounding the Academy Awards—almost as if the shiny golden statue is a true measure of talent. Each year, you see actors delivering rehearsed speeches and responding with feigned surprise at their wins. Yet, Washington embraces a more refreshing viewpoint.
In a recent interview with Variety, the acclaimed actor shared that while he appreciates the recognition, he doesn’t place much value on the awards themselves. “I don’t do that for Oscars. I don’t care about that,” Washington stated.
Having received nine Academy Award nominations and winning two, Washington doesn’t find himself participating in the competitiveness that has seemingly taken over the awards scene.
“There have been times when I thought I shouldn’t have won, or maybe I should have,” he reflected. “Awards are given by men. God gives rewards.”
He also acknowledged that while many in the industry seem fixated on winning, that’s not where his focus lies. “I’m not that interested in Oscars. People ask me. I’m not bragging next to the other!”
Washington added, “In the end, [Oscars] aren’t going to do anything good for me.”
This interview comes just after his recognition in the “Gladiator II” for best supporting actor. He previously made it clear to the New York Times that he didn’t feel any disappointment over not receiving a nomination. “Are you kidding? Oh, I’m so upset,” he responded, clearly jesting.
Washington has previously won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in “Glory” and Best Actor in “Training Day.”
