Parental responsibility law in Gloucester Township: Correspondence

Parental responsibility law in Gloucester Township: Correspondence

Issue: The law in Gloucester Township, New Jersey allows parents to hold liability for child crimes.

I completely agree with Gloucester’s stance on this. Parents should definitely be held accountable for their children’s actions. It makes sense, right? But, there’s a catch—you can only be warned about up to three offenses. After that, I suppose, it might seem a bit excessive.

I mean, it’s reasonable to think that involving teachers, police, and others in the community could help in managing children’s behavior. Maybe, just maybe, knowing there’s a risk of jail time will make parents more vigilant and set a better example for their kids. Who knows?

And for those parents with multiple children, I would suggest—if you’re not ready to guide your child toward being an asset rather than a burden on society, perhaps you should reconsider having them at all.

I’ve supported this type of accountability for a long time. One of the best illustrations I’ve seen? Kids who were vandalizing a bridge had to sit and watch while their parents were ordered to buy paint to cover the graffiti. It really hit home for everyone who witnessed it. That moment was a true lesson.

I think Gloucester Township really understands how to tackle community crime. It would be great to see similar measures adopted by the New York City Council. Maybe this way, our kids would learn how to behave in public.

I can’t help but wonder, though—can this enforcement genuinely change the paths of the kids committing these crimes? I don’t have an answer, but it feels a bit like wishful thinking.

After spending 38 years as a school nurse, my advice to parents is straightforward: set clear, consistent expectations for behavior and academic performance early on. Don’t wait until they’re teenagers; it’s crucial.

Issue: In the column regarding the role of the Obama administration in the Russian Gate scandal.

It seems that many leaders have neglected their duty to maintain security and protect individual rights. Instead, they’re pouring their energy into propaganda. The intelligence reports that former President Obama passed on to President Trump are almost reminiscent of what we saw during the Nazi era or what we currently witness in Putin’s Russia.

Now, while the Trump administration might be perceived as spreading alarming information to its opponents, at least they’re trying to deliver on some of their campaign promises, such as immigration reform and economic initiatives.

Thank you for your insights, Miranda Devine. I really hope that these political figures, from Obama on down, will be compelled to testify under oath. What they’ve done to this nation over the last decade feels nothing short of treason. Their anti-Trump actions have only served to harm Americans.
