Yankees GM Defends Manager Boone Amid Struggles
St. Louis – Brian Cashman has frequently remarked that Aaron Boone faces the “slings and arrows” of criticism in his role.
On Friday, the Yankees’ general manager reflected on the challenges Boone has faced amidst the team’s recent struggles.
“As long as I can,” Cashman noted during a conversation at Bush Stadium. “I really can’t comprehend how managers, especially in high-pressure cities like New York, manage. I’ve told him multiple times about how he approaches pre-game and post-game press conferences. While I try to guide him daily, it’s undoubtedly a tough task. Maintaining composure without getting emotional takes a certain skill. He keeps his cool, but it’s undoubtedly challenging. He recognizes how tough the sport can be.”
“He’s really invested in these players, just like we all are, and for some time now, he’s been trying to make sense of difficult plays and poor performances. It’s not easy to explain why we’re facing this storm,” Cashman added.
Boone, who signed a two-year extension just before this season, is now contracted through 2027. However, he has faced plenty of fan backlash, particularly after the Yankees began a series against the Cardinals with a record of 29-37, following a rough couple of months.
Boone prefers a flexible approach to the ups and downs of the 162-game season, which Cashman views as a strength.
“I know I couldn’t handle that,” Cashman admitted. “I’d likely end up saying more regrettable things due to lack of sleep and constant provocation.”
