Tristan Rogers, Iconic Soap Actor, Dies at 79

Tristan Rogers, the esteemed Australian actor known for portraying Robert Scorpio in one of the most beloved soap operas, has passed away at the age of 79. His battle with lung cancer was revealed just last month.

Soodak fondly remembered him, stating that his role in General Hospital “meant everything to him.” She expressed how passionately he embraced the character of Scorpio, saying he built it from the ground up. Originally intended for just a day’s work, he transformed the role into something monumental. “He was incredibly loyal, kind, and had a deep love for his family,” she added.

Frank Valentini, executive producer of General Hospital, expressed the heartache felt within the show’s community at Rogers’ passing. He noted how Tristan captivated audiences for 45 years and emphasized that Port Charles feels different without him and his character.

Rogers was born in Melbourne in 1946. He initially explored modeling for rock bands and appeared in commercials before he fully embraced acting. Early in his career, he starred in Australian productions like Bellbird and Number 96 as well as a few British films. He arrived in the US in 1980, quickly taking on the role of Robert Scorpio, which became the defining moment of his career.

What’s interesting is that Rogers was brought on for just one day, but he soon became integral to the series’ biggest story arc. He even stood as Luke Spencer’s best man during Luke and Laura’s wedding in 1981—a historic episode that attracted an astonishing 30 million viewers, making it the most-watched daytime drama in U.S. history.

Reflecting on his early days on the show, Rogers remarked, “I didn’t realize the significance of General Hospital back then; it felt like just another job for me.” But he quickly became immersed in what the show represented, describing it as being swept away by overwhelming waves.

Although Robert was killed off in 1992, the character made a surprising return in 2006. Rogers continued to make appearances until 2019.

In a twist, Rogers brought his character into the spinoff series, General Hospital: Night Shift, where Robert battled colon cancer. At the time, he expressed how unconventional this was for a character like his, saying, “They don’t typically get colon cancer; they get shot or hit by trains.” Yet, he viewed it as a challenge, hoping it might inspire viewers to get tested.

Outside of General Hospital, Rogers also featured in shows like Young and Restless, Babylon 5, and even lent his voice to the Disney character in Rescuers Down Under. He won a Daytime Emmy for his role in the series Studio City in 2020.

Rogers is survived by his wife, Teresa Parkerson, and their two children, Sarah and Kale.
