Trump Celebrates 90th Anniversary of the Social Security Act

On Thursday, President Donald Trump made an announcement regarding the upcoming celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Social Security Act. He stated, “To safeguard our interests, we have successfully removed nearly 275,000 unauthorized individuals from the social security system. Many of them have already departed the country, yet we’ve been sending them ongoing checks.”

Trump continued, “This strengthens the system. It certainly makes it stronger. While Biden isn’t seeing the same results, everyone has had a hand in this. We’re undertaking historic deportations to combat more offenses than just social security fraud.”

The National Archives notes that before the Social Security Act was enacted in the 1930s, care for seniors fell to local organizations, states, and families, aside from pensions for veterans.

According to the archives, “The widespread hardship during the Great Depression led to Congressional support for multiple proposals for a national old-age insurance system.” On January 17, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed Congress, advocating for the “Social Security” Act. On the same day, Senators Robert Wagner and David Lewis introduced a bill reflecting the administration’s stance. However, the Senate and House encountered opposition from those who believed the government overstepped into private matters and those opposed to higher employer taxes. Ultimately, a compromise bill passed both chambers, and Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act on August 15, 1935.

In April, Trump’s administration began to rectify Social Security numbers previously issued to undocumented immigrants by earlier administrations, according to reports. The plan has reportedly removed over 6,300 numbers linked to individuals with criminal backgrounds, terrorist ties, or revoked visas.

Breitbart News emphasized that safeguarding Social Security was a key component of Trump’s campaign, and he, along with Republicans in Congress, aimed to prioritize the issue in comprehensive legislation.
