Trump Considers Security Guarantees for Ukraine

WASHINGTON – President Trump has, in principle, agreed to provide Ukraine with a “security guarantee” aimed at safeguarding its borders against Russia, particularly in light of potential peace negotiations, as confirmed by various sources.

Nevertheless, the specific details of these security guarantees, which were discussed during a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, remain unclear. Notably, Trump has ruled out sending US troops and has previously stated he is against Ukraine’s NATO membership.

According to a source familiar with the discussions, the security measures could involve a US-supported, European-led initiative.

This year, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had offered to send peacekeeping forces to Ukraine, raising concerns about the human and financial burdens involved in protecting Kyiv. It’s worth noting that the US has already committed $200 billion since Russia’s invasion began in 2022.

The United States has mutual defense agreements with the UK and France, which means their involvement on the ground would effectively provide Ukraine with a form of protection akin to NATO membership.

Per Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, an attack on one NATO member is deemed an attack on all 32 member nations.

As part of any potential peace discussions, Ukraine may concede land currently occupied by Russia.

Following a series of calls between Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and European leaders, the arrangement came into focus. It requires Ukraine’s European allies to respond to any future threats against the country.

Reports suggest that Putin is on board with the proposed arrangement, although European leaders are seeking clarification on the role of the US within such agreements.

“As part of the security guarantees for Ukraine, the US has proposed a guarantee that might mimic Article 5,” a source relayed to AFP.

These discussions surrounding security assurances come at a time when Zelensky is scheduled to meet Trump in Washington, D.C., on Monday.
