Commanders bring star receiver Terry McLaurin back amid contract issues

Terry McLaurin Activated, Contract Talks Uncertain

Terry McLaurin has been cleared to practice after being removed from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. However, the big question is whether he’ll strike a new contract with the Commanders before the season kicks off.

Previously, McLaurin was sidelined due to an ankle issue, and during the first four days of July training camp, he faced a hefty fine of $200,000 because of a contract dispute.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McLaurin’s return to practice is a significant step in his recovery but doesn’t appear to impact ongoing negotiations. There’s a sense of wait-and-see, with NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport describing it as merely a “little step” in McLaurin’s progress. As we get closer to the season, it’s become clear that he’s focusing on getting his body ready to play.

McLaurin, who is now 30 years old, is in the final year of a three-year deal that totals $68.4 million. In contrast, other star receivers like Ja’Marr Chase and DK Metcalf have recently secured contract extensions with their teams, which adds a layer of intrigue to McLaurin’s situation.

Despite some complications in his contract talks, he remains a crucial player for the Commanders. In the last five seasons, he’s consistently surpassed 1,000 receiving yards, amassing 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns during the past season.

Expressing his feelings about returning to camp last month, McLaurin shared his appreciation for the support from teammates and fans: “They showed me a lot of love. It’s business, but it has nothing to do with them.” That sentiment really strikes a chord, doesn’t it? It seems like he values the camaraderie just as much as the contract side of things.

Last season, the Commanders wrapped up with a 12-5 record, making it to the NFC Championship Game before falling to the Eagles. Looking ahead, they face the Bengals for their second preseason matchup before kicking off the regular season against the Giants on September 7th.
