Spike Lee's Colin Kaepernick docuseries will not be released by ESPN.

Spike Lee’s multipart documentary series about former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick will no longer move forward as an ESPN films project. This comes after Kaepernick’s 2016 protests against racial injustice, which ignited a national conversation, according to statements from both the filmmakers and ESPN.

ESPN mentioned in a statement to Reuters that, “ESPN, Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee have collectively decided that they will no longer be able to proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences.”

They also expressed appreciation for the efforts put into the film, noting the collaboration despite it not reaching completion.

Lee confirmed to Reuters on Friday that the series won’t be released. Speaking at the Harold and Carroll Pump Foundation dinner in Beverly Hills, California, he was reticent when asked about the reasons behind the decision, citing a private agreement. “I can’t. I signed private. I can’t talk about it,” he stated.

Kaepernick, who played for the San Francisco 49ers between 2011 and 2016, became a controversial figure after kneeling during the national anthem in 2016 to protest systemic racism and police violence. Since that season, he hasn’t played in the NFL, and many believe his activism made teams hesitant to sign him, especially in light of backlash from figures like former President Donald Trump. Kaepernick eventually filed a grievance against team owners and reached a settlement with the league in 2019.

A representative for Kaepernick indicated there were no comments available about the documentary on Saturday.

Production on the documentary began in 2022, with ESPN promoting it as a comprehensive first-person account of Kaepernick’s experiences, featuring in-depth interviews with various players.

Back in September, reports indicated that the project was facing delays due to creative disagreements between Kaepernick and Lee, leading ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro to suggest filmmakers could seek other avenues.
