Activists Urge FBI to Investigate Crime Syndicates in Queens
Activists in Queens are pushing for the FBI to look into crime syndicates that are transforming Roosevelt Avenue into a dangerous environment. They describe the area as increasingly resembling “gangland.”
In a letter sent to FBI Director Kash Patel on August 14, Rosa Sanchez, leader of the Restore Roosevelt Avenue Coalition, along with Democratic District Leader Hiram Monserrate, expressed their concerns. They requested that the FBI investigate gangs involved in serious criminal activities such as human trafficking, the illegal drug trade, and the widespread distribution of forged documents, which they argue threatens national security.
The activists assert that only federal intervention can adequately address these issues, as they believe state and local law enforcement efforts are not enough.
Sanchez and Monserrate acknowledged the actions taken by the Trump administration against certain immigrant gangs, including the Venezuela-based Tren de Aragua and the 18th Avenue gang. However, they believe more needs to be done to ensure community safety, as both gangs still operate actively in the area.
The NYPD has reportedly made over 500 arrests this year related to prostitution in what is often termed the “lovers’ market,” yet the illicit brothels persist.
The two leaders pointed out that many of these establishments are believed to be controlled by Chinese gangs. They refer to information gathered from sources that indicates several locations are managed by organized crime linked to China. “The information we’ve been gathering is quite disturbing,” noted a leader from the Corona Elmhurst community.
Monserrate specifically mentioned that the Triads are among the Chinese groups involved in sex trafficking operations.
According to the activists’ letter, gang members on 18th Avenue are also involved in selling fake green cards, Social Security cards, and driver’s licenses along Roosevelt Avenue.
Sanchez and Monserrate remarked, “Organized crime by both Latino and Chinese groups is wreaking havoc in our community. We urge your institutions to eliminate modern slavery and dangerous criminal elements.” They also forwarded addresses of suspected brothels to the FBI.
In the past year, reports have highlighted ongoing crime and illegal activities along Roosevelt Avenue, prompting Governor Kathy Hochul to send state troopers to assist the NYPD in addressing these issues.
