Injury Strikes Sophie Cunningham
Sophie Cunningham faced a significant knee injury during the Indiana Fever’s match against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday. Early in the second quarter, she had to exit the court after an unfortunate collision.
The incident occurred when Bria Hartley of the Sun was attempting a pass. Cunningham, stepping up for extra defense, stumbled and fell directly onto her right leg as Hartley passed the ball to Lexie Hull. It was a challenging moment on the court, with Cunningham visibly in pain.
She quickly grabbed her knees and was assisted off the court by a trainer. The Fever confirmed that Cunningham injured her right knee, but they haven’t disclosed the extent of the injury yet. Fans are understandably concerned, considering the visible discomfort she exhibited.
Injuries seem to be a recurring issue for the Fever this season. With superstar Caitlyn Clark also facing health problems, the team has been struggling. Recently, it was announced that both Sydney Colson and Ahri MacDonald would miss the remainder of the 2025 season due to severe injuries. Colson suffered a torn ACL, and McDonald has a broken bone in her right leg.
During the brief time she spent on the court, Cunningham did not score and missed all three of her field goal attempts, with one rebound and one turnover.
The Fever are hoping that Cunningham’s injury isn’t as severe as it seems. Currently sitting in seventh place in the WNBA with a record of 18-16, they are trying to secure a playoff spot, with the top eight teams qualifying.
