Kevin O’Connell’s On-air Moment Surprises Viewers
The Minnesota Vikings’ head coach, Kevin O’Connell, demonstrated a reason why NFL coaches are often cautious about being mic’d during game days. While other sports regularly feature more dynamic live broadcasts, the NFL typically opts for less exposure, perhaps to avoid the need for extensive editing later due to colorful language. Yet, during the preseason, the Vikings’ broadcast decided to mic O’Connell, aiming to enhance viewer engagement. This move, however, resulted in him inadvertently dropping an expletive live on air.
In a live interview during the matchup between the Vikings and the New England Patriots, O’Connell responded to questions while observing the game. He didn’t seem to hold back when expressing himself about a play he didn’t like, which—let’s be honest—happens to a lot of coaches.
In the third quarter, O’Connell shared his enthusiasm, saying, “I’m excited about this team this year and I’m excited about this play call and… oh, no! F—, it’s coming back.” His on-air slip came after he noticed illegal movements at the line of scrimmage before the snap, resulting in a penalty that nullified what could have been a successful play for the Vikings.
Despite not fielding his first-string offense, O’Connell expected his team to put in a solid effort, regardless of who was playing. The Vikings faced a 20-12 defeat against the Patriots, with quarterback JJ McCarthy still sidelined from his second preseason game. McCarthy, who missed the entirety of last season due to meniscus tears, has shown promise in practices, including those shared with the Patriots. Historically, O’Connell’s Vikings secured an impressive 14-3 record with quarterback Sam Darnold leading the charge, but with Darnold currently transitioning to the Seattle Seahawks, McCarthy’s return will be pivotal as he heads into his second season.
O’Connell’s hope? To minimize those slip-ups from the sidelines as the team eyes a return to the playoffs.
