Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton criticized Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) during an interview, highlighting Cornyn’s lengthy 23-year tenure in the Senate and his push for various bipartisan initiatives, including gun control and border wall funding.
Paxton, who is considering a primary challenge against Cornyn, shared these thoughts with Breitbart News host Matthew Boyle. He emphasized that Cornyn is seeking a fifth term in office.
“He’s been in the Senate for five terms, and I’m just getting started,” Paxton stated, referring to Cornyn’s long career and his own age of 52.
He continued, asserting that Cornyn has not made any significant progress during his time in Washington. “He’s more of an insider than a leader,” Paxton remarked, commenting on Cornyn’s lack of engagement with his record.
In August, Cornyn faced backlash for his comments suggesting he couldn’t recall collaborating with Democrats on President Biden’s gun control legislation.
On June 25, 2022, Biden enacted the Gun Control Act, which Cornyn played a role in shaping; he was later acknowledged at a White House event for his involvement.
Chris McNutt, Chairman of Texas Gun Rights, discussed Cornyn’s comments, noting, “As he ages, it seems Cornyn is losing touch, which might explain his misguided view of his standing with Paxton.” He added that Texas gun rights supporters are keen to remind Cornyn of where he stands on these issues.
Paxton further criticized Cornyn over his immigration stance. He argued that Cornyn is resisting Trump on border security matters, recalling that Cornyn had previously doubted Trump’s commitment to building the wall.
“Cornyn only seems to engage philosophically when he talks about the wall,” Paxton suggested.
