Matthew Stafford Takes to the Field Amidst Injury Concerns
On Monday, fans of the Los Angeles Rams were eager to see who would be practicing. Quarterback Matthew Stafford, who has been grappling with a troubling back disc issue, was spotted in a red practice jersey alongside his teammates. The Rams shared a photo of Stafford heading onto the field to participate in drills.
Despite limited roles, head coach Sean McVay appeared pleased with Stafford’s performance as a starter. “I thought he did a good job today,” he remarked to reporters. “We had 26 plays, and he managed the huddle really well. He had a good sense of the field and went where the ball needed to go. It was a competitive day all around.”
While McVay expressed optimism about Stafford’s practice session, he emphasized the need for caution going forward, stating that the situation remains “very fluid.” He made it clear that there were no definitive updates on Stafford’s status as the week began.
Stafford’s condition at training camp has been somewhat unclear, with few solid updates on his health. It was reported that he received an epidural to address his back problems. However, McVay shed some light on the matter last week, indicating that Stafford’s next steps would be evident during practice. The Rams began their week on the field with the 37-year-old quarterback alongside his teammates.
As the preseason countdown continues, the Rams are certainly hopeful that Stafford will be ready by September 7th, when they face the Houston Texans at Sophie Stadium. They’re aiming for another playoff appearance in 2025 after finishing last season with a 10-7 record. During that stretch, Stafford managed to throw 20 touchdowns against eight interceptions.
This year, Stafford will be working with a new receiver who joined the Rams after a tough tenure with the Las Vegas Raiders and the New York Jets. He’s stepping into the gap left by Cooper Kupp, whose departure to the Seattle Seahawks this offseason was a notable change for the team.
Puka Nacua has emerged as a promising wideout for the Rams, though Kupp, known for his pivotal role in the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI victory, has been missed. Kupp made a significant impact during that season, leading the league in receptions, yards, and touchdowns, and he caught a game-winning touchdown from Stafford, sealing the game with just 1:25 left.
That was a remarkable chapter, but right now, the focus is entirely on ensuring that Stafford stays healthy throughout the 2025 season. If he isn’t ready, Jimmy Garoppolo is likely to step in as the backup after the Rams announced he wouldn’t participate in the preseason.
