Tampa – Giancarlo Stanton’s Ongoing Struggles
Giancarlo Stanton seems to be in a tough spot with his physical condition. His frustration is palpable, especially after missing out on playing in the field against the Cardinals over the weekend.
After playing in the outfield for three consecutive days last week—a first in three years—he still felt discomfort in his lower body. Given the expansive outfield at Bush Stadium, the decision was made to keep him on the bench for all three games.
Manager Aaron Boone spoke about Stanton’s situation, mentioning, “He’s in tune with his body and has a lot of mental discipline.” He emphasized how Stanton is dedicated to understanding his physical limitations and making honest assessments about what he can realistically do.
Looking ahead, Stanton faces another test on Tuesday when the Yankees meet the Rays at Steinbrenner Field, which, interestingly, has similar dimensions to Yankee Stadium. Whether he’ll be able to perform remains to be seen.
This upcoming game could be pivotal, as it hinges on how Stanton’s body responds and whether the Yankees feel confident in letting him take the field again, all while minimizing the risk of further injury.
Some fans may wonder if Aaron Judge will also be healthy enough to resume playing in the outfield. There hasn’t been much information regarding the two-game series against the Rays, yet Stanton’s batting will be crucial for the Yankees regardless.
Boone added in reference to Stanton, “He doesn’t allow himself to get bogged down by emotions. He’s focused on what he can do without making excuses.”
Additionally, the Yankees have opted to send catcher JC Eskara to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre.
Before suffering a shoulder injury after colliding with the wall in right field on August 8th, Stanton was considered an essential player on the bench for Boone.
This weekend against the Red Sox might see the Yankees refrain from playing another left-handed starter, giving Stanton an opportunity for a pinch-hit or defensive role while he continues to recover.
