Practice Brawl Erupts in Titans Camp
During a practice session for the SC Hot Tennessee Titans, a surprising confrontation occurred involving two key players. The scene unfolded when Cam Ward, the first overall pick from the 2025 NFL Draft, went head-to-head with veteran defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons.
Ward had just completed a touchdown pass to wide receiver Calvin Ridley and, in the spirit of celebration, he performed his signature “Zombieland” routine right in front of Simmons. It seems Simmons didn’t take kindly to this jovial gesture. He reacted by pushing Ward away using both hands on his face mask, which escalated tensions on the field.
This prompted the Titans’ offensive line to rush in, keen to protect their quarterback, including left tackle Dan Moore Jr. Responding to the incident, Moore firmly stated that such actions against the quarterback are unacceptable. “It’s definitely not,” he said, emphasizing the need to maintain a protective environment for the team’s signal caller.
Eventually, the altercation reached a point where both players had to be separated. Simmons ended up losing his helmet in the scuffle and exited the field, while Ward continued with the next play, undeterred.
Titans head coach Brian Callahan took notice of the situation, putting the entire team through a rigorous practice in the sweltering heat of 96 degrees as a form of discipline. Cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. shared his thoughts post-practice, stating that while competitiveness is vital, the quarterback’s safety should always come first. “But when it happens, it shows you the type of dog he has. He’s not going to take anything,” Brownlee remarked, hinting at Ward’s determination.
Later in the practice, Ward and tackle J.C. Latham were surprised to see Simmons’ aggressive side following a short-yard touchdown run by Julius Chestnut. Simmons had been trash-talking during this segment, which likely contributed to the simmering tensions. Ward’s follow-up touchdown pass to Ridley only fueled the rivalry.
While some level of competition is encouraged in NFL training camps, players are cautious about physical confrontations, especially involving their quarterback. Simmons, it seems, wasn’t going to let Ward’s celebration slide without a response, but the Titans clearly need to establish boundaries in these situations.
Looking ahead, Ward, who had a solid showing in his second preseason game with 7 completions on 7 attempts for 42 yards, is set to face the Minnesota Vikings this Friday. This will be a crucial moment before he makes his official debut with the Denver Broncos on September 7th.
