Texas Attorney General Targets Beto O’Rourke
The ongoing rezoning debate in Texas has prompted the state’s attorney general, Ken Paxton, to pursue legal action against former House member Beto O’Rourke. This stems from O’Rourke’s alleged support for Democrats who are avoiding congressional votes.
Paxton has accused O’Rourke of breaking state law by misleading donors to his political action committee and using the funds to assist Democrats in evading voting responsibilities.
“The defendant is putting personal expenses of Texas lawmakers above the law, raising and misusing political contributions unlawfully,” Paxton stated in a press release. He also alleged that O’Rourke and his associates have supported Democrats in ways that deceive donors, tarnish public trust, and undermine the legislature.
In response, O’Rourke’s group has claimed that Paxton is trying to intimidate him. However, a district judge ruled in favor of Paxton, asserting that failing to issue a restraining order could inflict irreversible harm to the state.
District Judge Megan Fahey noted, “The defendant’s fundraising tactics violate Texas laws and can be considered misleading or deceptive under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act.”
Paxton expressed approval of the ruling, claiming it limits O’Rourke’s financial support from exiting Texas. “This action stirs accountability for those involved in purportedly fraudulent activities and who hinder our Congress,” he said.
Meanwhile, some Texas Democrats who had initially fled the state aiming to contest the rezoning have returned, asserting they will appropriately challenge these legislative measures in court.
