Jannik Sinner withdraws from Cincinnati Open final because of illness while facing Alcaraz

Cincinnati Open Final: Alcaraz Takes Win as Sinner Retires

The tennis community had its eyes on Janik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, especially after their recent clash in the Wimbledon final. However, the excitement turned to concern during the Cincinnati Open Finals on Monday, where fans witnessed only five games before Sinner had to retire due to illness.

This unexpected turn of events meant that Alcaraz walked away with the trophy. Sinner, visibly unwell, expressed his regret to the audience, saying, “I’m so sorry for letting you down. From yesterday, I wasn’t feeling well. I hoped it would get better, but it didn’t.” He added that he had tried to continue but felt unable to proceed.

While Sinner did not disclose the specific nature of his illness, he certainly didn’t seem at his best. Alcaraz capitalized on the situation, quickly taking a 5-0 lead in the first set. Following the fifth game, Sinner called for medical assistance, which led him to ultimately inform the chair umpire that he needed to retire.

In a display of sportsmanship, Alcaraz approached Sinner after the match. He even wrote a message on the camera, stating, “Sorry, Giannik.”

The looming concern now is whether Sinner will be fit to compete in the upcoming US Open, which begins next week in New York. As the reigning US Open Champion, Sinner’s focus will certainly shift to recovery, especially after also winning Wimbledon and the Australian Open recently.

On the other hand, Alcaraz is not without his accolades, having claimed his first Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2022, making him the youngest champion in ATP history.

Fans will be waiting to see how this rivalry plays out, especially following their intense battles, including a memorable five-set match at the 2025 French Open final.
