Finnish Parliament Mourns Loss of Member

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo honored members of his national parliament after the tragic news emerged that one of them had died early Tuesday morning.

Emery Pertonen, a 30-year-old member of the Finland Social Democrats, reportedly took his own life at the Capitol in Helsinki. Emergency services had received a call at 11:06 AM local time, leading to a swift police response that indicated no foul play was involved.

Despite his young age, Pertonen had an extensive political background in Finland. He began his career in the Local Government Left Party as a teen and later became a Council member in the 2023 general election. He also served as chairperson of the city council and contributed to his party’s newspaper.

The Finnish Parliament made a formal announcement about Pertonen’s death on Tuesday afternoon. The state-owned Finnish broadcasting company YLE mentioned that they deviated from their usual practice of not reporting suicides. When questioned, the Congressional Security Director did not deny it was a suicide.

According to YLE, Pertonen had been on sick leave for much of the year due to kidney issues. With the Finnish Parliament currently in recess for the summer, many elected representatives were likely away from the building. The liberal conservative coalition government, led by Prime Minister Orpo, was attending a summer policy retreat when they learned of Pertonen’s death.

In his remarks, the Prime Minister expressed condolences to the families of the late lawmakers, stating, “I recently received some shocking news from our shared workplace, Congress: one of my colleagues has passed away on the premises of Congress.”

Orpo also mentioned that the government’s retreat would pause in light of the tragedy for the rest of the day.

This is a developing story.
