Fitness Challenge Sparks Competition Between HHS and Defense Secretaries

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently threw down the gauntlet to Defense Secretary Pete Hegses in an intriguing fitness competition.

This contest is happening at the Pentagon Athletic Center, featuring a formidable challenge of 100 push-ups and 50 pull-ups, all to be completed in less than five minutes.

Titled the “Pete and Bobby Challenge,” this event sees the two leaders accompanied by teams from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Marines, and the Department of Defense.

“Today, we have the Big Pete and Bobby Challenge,” Kennedy remarked while wearing a T-shirt and jeans. “50 pull-ups and 100 push-ups. We’re aiming for under five minutes.”

Hegses emphasized the importance of fitness, urging service members to adhere to health standards, stating, “We’ll fit, not fat.”

Previously, the Defense Secretary expressed frustration about a report indicating that over two-thirds of military reserves were overweight, labelling the situation as “completely unacceptable.”

“This is the consequence of ignoring standards, and we are addressing this. There are real fitness and weight expectations,” Hegses stated.

The article referenced an American Security Project study, highlighting the military’s growing reliance on the National Guard and reserves. It pointed out that losing personnel due to obesity-related issues poses a significant risk, advocating for policy changes to enhance health and preparedness in the reserves.

In a video shared by Kennedy, Hegses noted that he won the contest with a time of around 5:25.

“We got really close. You were right behind me,” Hegses encouraged the 71-year-old Kennedy.

Kennedy added, “This was something President Trump encouraged us to do. It’s the start of our tour, and we want to challenge Americans to prioritize health—eating better and exercising more.”

Following this, Kennedy and Hegses extended an invitation to Transportation Secretary Shawn Duffy to take part in the challenge.

“Duffy, I’m inviting you to join the Bobby Challenge with Pete. Think you can complete it in under five minutes?” Hegses said in the video.

This fitness initiative aligns with the recent revival of fitness testing and goals set by President Trump’s Presidential Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, which had been previously closed under former President Barack Obama.

Officials clarify that this isn’t merely a publicity stunt. Rather, it forms part of a broader campaign aimed at promoting physical fitness, especially given the rising rates of overweight individuals in the military. By having such high-ranking officials actively showcase fitness, they hope to convey a strong message against the backdrop of modern sedentary lifestyles.

Inspired by movements like the “Ice Bucket Challenge,” the “Pete and Bobby” challenge aims to gain traction online and engage a larger audience.
