Rep. Ritchie Torres supports former opponent Gov. Hochul in her reelection bid

Richie Torres Endorses Hochul for Reelection

Bronx Representative Richie Torres has officially backed Governor Kathy Hochul in her reelection bid, ending a period of speculation about his position. This endorsement came just days ago, as he urged support for the incumbent Democrats.

Six months ago, Torres hinted at his support, stating the governor’s reelection should be seen as inevitable, even characterizing it somewhat dramatically as a “wreck of election train waiting for it to happen.” He emphasized that Hochul’s leadership is the type needed at this moment.

In a recent statement, Torres praised Hochul, asserting, “She’s not just a performer. She’s substantive and focused on solving real problems. That’s the kind of leadership we need now.” This statement followed his announcement on News 12.

He expressed the necessity for Democrats and New Yorkers to unify behind the governor, particularly as she confronts challenges posed by both New York’s issues and the Trump administration.

Interestingly, Torres had previously been vocal about his criticisms of Hochul. Over time, he raised concerns about several significant issues, such as drug use in the Bronx and changes to Medicaid home care, among others. His remarks once pointedly suggested that Hochul seemed ineffective in governance.

Just this Monday, the two appeared together at a rally alongside President Trump, celebrating achievements in the Bronx. Hochul acknowledged their differing opinions but emphasized their shared goal: to create a safer and more affordable New York while battling against Donald Trump.

Looking ahead, Hochul faces substantial opposition, particularly from Governor Antonio Delgado. GOP Representative Elise Stefanik has indicated her decision on potential gubernatorial contenders may be made by year’s end, while fellow Republican Rep. Mike Lawler has already declared he won’t run.
