Jeff McNeil shines again in Mets' decisive win

Washington Game Recap

Juan Soto, contributing with his own home run, has shown a mix of performance this season, sometimes chilly and other times scorching. The same can be said for teammates Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, and Brandon Nimmo. It’s interesting how Brett Baty seems to struggle more than most batters.

However, Jeff McNeil has proved to be a reliable hitter, finding success against both left-handed and right-handed pitchers. He tends to deliver in clutch situations and remains consistent whether at home or on the road.

In a recent game at Nationals Park, McNeil played a key role in an 8-1 victory, continuing to demonstrate the kind of hitting that has become his trademark.

Manager Carlos Mendoza praised McNeil’s performance, noting he was “very consistent” and highlighting that McNeil reached base four times and finished just a triple shy of the cycle in that game.

Defensively, McNeil has versatility; he can fill any outfield position and plays solidly in the infield as well. Notably, he seems to have stayed true to his hitting approach this season. Following a strong finish to the 2024 season, he adjusted his swing, focusing instead on hitting the ball harder rather than making softer contact. The results are showing, as he came into the season ready to hit.

If something wasn’t working before, McNeil has been quick to adapt. This year, he feels that he hasn’t deviated from his plan much. “I’ve stuck to the same swing thinking,” he mentioned after a successful hit in the fifth inning. He’s been consistent, with OPS numbers reflecting his performance: .779 in May, .806 in June, .742 in July, and .782 through mid-August.

Even during July—typically a tougher month for him—he’s managed to maintain better performance compared to the average major league OPS, which was around .719 at the time. Back in early May, he went three games without a hit, which was unusual for him this season.

In the last four games, he’s stepped up, hitting exceptionally well with 17 total runs, two doubles, and a home run. “I have a good idea of what I want to do and what has worked in the past,” McNeil noted, currently holding an OPS of .795.

Mendoza acknowledged McNeil’s impact, saying he was “huge” for the team, which certainly captures the essence of his contribution this season.
