Ancient Roman Bathhouse Found in Turkey

Recently, archaeologists have uncovered a luxurious Roman bathhouse in Turkey, which surpasses a previous discovery from another period. This exciting find was reported by the Turkish Anadolu Agency (AA). It all began when landowners, while planting sour cherry saplings, stumbled upon a Roman floor mosaic earlier this year.

Using advanced underground imaging technology, researchers pinpointed the bath structure about 230 feet south of the mosaic. This building, spanning 75 square meters, dates back to the late Roman era and boasts an underfloor heating system, along with separate zones for cold, warm, and hot baths—essentially the ancient version of modern-day spas.

The bathhouse also includes sweat chambers for both clean water and wastewater management, as well as a pool and individual waterways. Local officials are planning to develop the site into a tourist attraction.

Ahmet Demilda, the provincial director of Culture and Tourism, remarked that the baths and mosaics represent just a portion of the significant ruins in the area. “The bath is truly a unique and important structure,” he emphasized. He further mentioned, “When I look at the overall layout, it appears to indicate an urban settlement. Excavations will continue.”

Interestingly, an archaeologist named Emrechier noted that these baths might be among the first of their kind found in the region. He stressed the importance of their architectural design, highlighting that the intact state of the cold, warm, and hot sections represents careful and planned engineering.

This bath complex is just one of an array of captivating archaeological finds in Turkey recently. For instance, this summer, researchers also uncovered a 5th-century Christian church. Additionally, early in 2025, the discovery of ancient bread dating back to the Bronze Age was announced in Central Turkey.
