Google pokes fun at Apple's challenges with AI while introducing the Pixel 10 smartphones.

Google Unveils Pixel 10 Smartphones with Advanced AI Features

On Wednesday, Google revealed a new series of Pixel smartphones that come packed with enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities. These innovations aim to streamline everything from accessing crucial information on your device to enhancing photos as they’re being taken.

This move with the four Pixel 10 models aligns with Google’s ongoing ambition to incorporate more technology into daily life, potentially reshaping societal interactions in the process. Meanwhile, it feels like Google is quietly nudging Apple, suggesting that they’re catching up to iPhones.

While Apple has rolled out some basic AI features on iPhones, they’ve yet to deliver on last year’s commitment to revamp Siri into a more dynamic virtual assistant.

Without directly calling Apple out, Google’s marketing campaign for the new Pixel models emphasizes their AI capabilities, noting that consumers won’t have to wait long to experience them.

“There was a lot of hype about this, and honestly, many promises fell flat,” said Google’s Executive Osterloh during a 75-minute presentation held in New York, which was co-hosted by Jimmy Fallon.

In contrast, Google has consistently infused more AI into its Pixel lineup since 2023, and this year’s advancements seem to elevate the technology significantly.

“I think we’re looking at game-changing phones this year,” Osterloh mentioned.

The Pixel 10 series will feature improved processors and introduce a new AI function called “Magic Cue,” designed to act like a digital assistant. For instance, if a user calls an airline, Magic Cue can instantly recognize the number and pull up relevant flight details from Gmail or Google Calendar.

The new Pixel phones also present a sneak peek of “Camera Coach,” an AI tool that provides real-time framing and lighting suggestions when capturing photos. This assistant can even determine the best lens mode for optimal images.

Premium versions, like the Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL, will include a “Super Res” feature that employs a range of software enhancements and AI techniques to achieve up to 100x zoom, allowing users to capture minute details from great distances.

Interestingly, some AI functionalities operate seamlessly, making it hard to discern whether the images reflect reality or have been altered by technology.

The Pixel 10 can also leverage users’ voices to translate phone conversations in real-time.

Additionally, Google is providing a complimentary one-year subscription to its AI Pro plan for purchasers of the higher-end Pixel 10 Pro or Pro XL, aimed at connecting more users with the Gemini Toolkit to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Pricing for the Pixel 10 models remains consistent with last year’s Pixel 9 lineup, starting at $800 for the base model, $1,000 for the Pro, $1,200 for the Pro XL, and $1,800 for the foldable options. The Pixel 10 series, including the foldable model, is expected to launch on August 28, while the Pixel 10 Pro fold will be available from October 9.

Despite the Pixel smartphones still being smaller players next to dominant competitors like the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy, Google’s progress in AI is certainly turning heads and maintaining interest in its lineup.

Research analyst Thomas Husson from Forrester referred to the Pixel as a true “lab of innovation” in this new AI era.

For Apple, the stakes seem to be higher than ever as they prepare to launch their next iPhone next month. While they’ve acknowledged that an upgraded Siri won’t be ready till next year, there are expectations for some AI advancements to showcase how the iPhone is evolving rather than falling behind.

I’ve always held a certain nostalgia for the once-popular Blackberry physical keyboard, which marks a stark contrast to the iPhone’s touchscreen that has dominated for nearly two decades.

Considering the manufacturing locations in China and India, pricing for Apple’s next phone will likely be scrutinized closely.

Fortunately for Apple, they received some relief recently amid tariff concerns. This development allows them to mitigate or possibly avert price increases on iPhones, similar to what Google achieved with the Pixel 10 models.
