DC Crime Rates Exceed National Averages

Recent data from the FBI indicates that crime rates in Washington, DC, including incidents of murder and robbery, are alarmingly high, outpacing many other cities and states across the country.

John R. Lott Jr., chairman of the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC), recently published an analysis that sheds light on these troubling statistics. It reveals that, well, DC’s crime rates are significantly higher than those in most states.

Key Findings from CPRC Report

  • Violent crime: DC’s violent crime rate stands 54% above that of New Mexico, which has the highest rate in the nation, and is 220% higher than the national average.
  • Murder: The district’s homicide rate is an astonishing 169% higher than Louisiana’s—the state with the highest national rate—and 523% higher than the average across the country.
  • Rape: While DC’s rape rate is 67% lower than Alaska’s, it remains 191% above the national average.
  • Robbery: The robbery rate in DC is 370% higher than that of Maryland, again indicating the highest rate nationally, and 955% above the national average.
  • Aggravated assault: DC’s assault rate is 25% lower than New Mexico’s but remains 140% higher than the national figure.
  • Property crimes: The property crime rate in DC exceeds New Mexico’s by 49% and is 134% higher than the national average.

However, Lott cautions that these reported figures may not fully capture the reality of crime in the district. Underreporting is a significant issue in Washington, often linked to a lack of trust in the police among residents. Many individuals choose not to report crimes, especially sensitive incidents like domestic violence or sexual assault, due to concerns about retaliation or disbelief that justice will be served.

Research suggests that a notable percentage of violent crimes—around 40%—and even a larger share of property crimes go unreported. This leads to a misleading portrayal of the actual crime situation in the capital.

A survey conducted in 2022 indicated that less than half of the residents in certain areas of DC believed that law enforcement could effectively protect them.

Despite potential underreporting, the disparities between DC and various states with high crime rates remain shocking across all categories. Later in his analysis, Lott criticized what he describes as the hypocrisy of some critics regarding the handling of crime in the district, especially in light of the Trump administration’s policies.

Government Response to Crime

The White House has also acknowledged the severity of the situation, citing that in 2024, DC had the fourth-highest murder rate in the nation. If DC were a state, it would hold the highest homicide rate overall.

Lott praised the federal law enforcement measures initiated by Trump, asserting that these efforts could significantly influence crime statistics. Since the declaration of federal oversight, police reports have indicated declines in various crime categories: a 46% drop in robbery, an 83% decrease in carjackings, and reductions in violent crimes by 22%.

“Evidence reveals that Washington, DC is facing one of the worst crime problems in the country,” Lott stated, highlighting the discrepancy between reported and actual crime.

In a recent visit to National Guard soldiers at the Capitol, Vice President JD Vance faced protests but remarked that DC should find solutions to its profoundly high murder rates.
