Texas Democrat’s Surprise Exit During Capitol Meeting

Texas State Representative Nicole Collier left a meeting unexpectedly, accompanied by California Governor Gavin Newsom and other Democratic colleagues. This abrupt departure came after she claimed she was informed that attending the meeting could be considered a felony.

Collier had been on the phone with Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin and other Democrats while Texas lawmakers were discussing a contentious district change bill that has support from former President Donald Trump. During the call, she expressed concerns that the bill infringed on the Voting Rights Act, arguing it would disenfranchise Black and Latino voters by manipulating district boundaries.

About thirty minutes into the discussion, Collier cut off the conversation, stating, “Sorry, I have to leave. They said it’s a felony for me to do this.”

After her exit, Newsom and New Jersey Senator Cory Booker expressed their outrage. “That’s outrageous,” Booker said, adding, “Rep. Collier in the toilet has more dignity than Donald Trump in the Oval Office.” Newsom agreed and indicated support for Collier.

Booker continued, criticizing the situation as an attempt to silence American leaders, particularly Black women, calling it “outrageous.” He highlighted the extreme measures being taken to limit her participation, even in a restroom.

This incident is part of a broader context where many Texas Democrats have left the state to avoid a quorum and stall the district bill. Texas Governor Greg Abbott and other leaders have threatened to arrest these Democrats if they do not return and fulfill their duties.

Following the Democrats’ eventual return to the legislature, enhanced security measures were implemented to ensure a quorum. Reports emerged that the Texas Department of Public Safety had been surveilling Democratic lawmakers to monitor their movements, requiring them to sign permissions if they needed to leave the building.

Collier chose to remain within the Texas State Capitol instead of complying with the measures imposed on her. Despite the Democratic opposition, the Texas House passed the district change bill on Wednesday.

In response, Newsom announced that California would move ahead with its own district map aimed at counteracting the changes proposed in Texas. Recently, California Democrats revealed a new map that could result in the removal of five Republican congressional seats, challenging the potential impact of Texas’s changes.

Collier’s office chose not to comment on the situation, citing ongoing sessions in the House, and attempts to reach other involved parties for statements were unsuccessful.
