Gotham FC’s Strong Start in CONCACAF W Champions Cup
Gotham FC kicked off their title defense with a solid performance, notching two early goals in a 2-1 victory that marked the beginning of their chase for the CONCACAF W Champions Cup trophy.
“I think it was a very positive performance. We started the game really well,” said Gotham coach Juan Carlos Amoros. “It’s a massive result. This tournament is significant for us, and we understand the reward it brings.”
“I really want to hold that trophy,” he added, expressing the team’s determination.
Following this match, Gotham will face the Utah Royals in their NWSL schedule on Saturday, and then prepare for their next Champions Cup group match against El Salvador’s Arianza on September 2nd.
The tournament features 10 teams from six different countries, including Orlando Pride, representing a third of the NWSL.
Amoros made significant changes to the starting lineup after the team suffered a tough 2-1 loss to Houston just days earlier, marking a quick turnaround for the players.
In that match, U.S. national team veteran Emily Sonnett scored an equalizer early in the second half, but the Houston Dash sealed their victory with a late goal in extra time.
Although Sonnett held her position in the starting XI, Amoros changed nine players, with Shelby Hogan taking the goalkeeping role. Rose Lovell was absent due to recovery from surgery, and main scorer Esther Gonzalez didn’t enter the match until the latter half.
Gotham’s Brazilian right-back Brunina got the scoring started in the sixth minute with an impressive strike from the top of the box, followed by Kiya Harper doubling the lead in the 24th minute with a shot set up by Sonnett.
Monterrey’s Marcela Restrepo managed to pull one back after capitalizing on a rebound off the crossbar.
“They were back in the game, but we remained calm,” said Amoros. “We played just 72 hours ago, and the team was fatigued. With nine changes in the lineup and four rookies, I think the team handled it well.”
Gonzalez joined the game in the second half, but neither team managed to score again after the break.
“It was a tough three-game week. But bouncing back from the Houston game was crucial for us to earn these three points,” Hogan remarked. “The team has great depth, and it was fantastic to see others get a chance to shine.”
Hogan added, “Leaving Houston without any points was disappointing, but we focused on starting this competition strongly. Those early two goals really boosted our confidence, and we delivered a full performance to clinch the win.”
