Eagles’ Saquon Barkley discusses the reasons behind the decreased value of running backs

Saquon Barkley’s Perspective on Running Back Valuation

Saquon Barkley has been instrumental in the Philadelphia Eagles’ successful Super Bowl run. In a recent interview, he discussed the ongoing issues surrounding the valuation of running backs in the NFL. He suggested that while his talent continues to shine, the team’s reluctance to offer substantial contracts reflects a broader trend within the league.

Barkley, a three-time Pro Bowler, commented on the pressures faced by elite running backs, noting that the market is shifting. He mentioned that his value is sometimes questioned due to the financial strategies employed by teams, which seem to favor cheaper alternatives. “It’s not just me,” he noted. “It’s about trying to get great players at lower costs.” He pointed to examples like Josh Jacobs receiving the franchise tag from the Las Vegas Raiders as indicative of this trend.

Interestingly, Barkley remarked that when players reach their 30s, wide receivers often secure large contracts, yet the narrative shifts when a running back finds himself in the same situation. “It’s a double standard,” he said, emphasizing how underperformance by receivers doesn’t receive the same scrutiny as it might for running backs. “Not everyone is Tom Brady,” he added with a hint of exasperation.

Reflecting on his recent performance, Barkley had one of the most impressive rushing seasons in NFL history. In sixteen games, he amassed 2,005 rushing yards, scoring 13 touchdowns and averaging 5.8 yards per carry. Furthermore, in the playoffs, he added 499 yards and five touchdowns, leading all running backs in these categories.

As he prepares for the upcoming season against the Dallas Cowboys, Barkley is hopeful that his contributions will help the Eagles chase yet another Super Bowl championship.
