Illegal Immigrant’s Arrest Incites Mixed Reactions

An undocumented immigrant, who gained sympathy from some on the left, was arrested last year for child sex crimes. During a raid by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Washington, D.C., he expressed a desire to be with his family, which resonated with many observers.

In a video captured by NBC4 reporter Aimee Cho, the man, visibly upset, cried out in Spanish that he wanted to be with his family and not involved in crime. “Sir, I have nothing,” he pleaded. “I don’t owe anything. I work. I want to be with my family.” He insisted he was coming from work and wasn’t a criminal, saying, “You’re hurting me.” These emotional appeals seemed to strike a chord with many left-leaning viewers.

However, the man was later identified as David Perez Theofani, who was arrested in January 2024 in Fairfax County on charges of serious sexual offenses against minors under 13, as reported by Tricia McLaughlin from the Department of Homeland Security.

According to Cho, Fairfax County Court records indicate that some accusations against him were later dropped, though specifics on the matter remain unclear. She mentioned reaching out to the Fairfax County Federal Lawyer’s Office for a comment, but had yet to receive a response. “Prosecutors refuse to prosecute,” she noted, adding that charges could be postponed for potential future prosecution if the victims wish to proceed.

The DHS stated that Perez Theofani illegally re-entered the U.S. three times and had a final removal order, yet he chose to return twice. Described as having come from Mexico, he was arrested for the serious crime against a child in January.

As the crime rate in D.C. continues to decline following a federal intervention with local law enforcement, former President Donald Trump is expected to oversee police and troops in the nation’s capital this Thursday.
