Democrats' warnings about a ‘threat to democracy’ backfire

Democratic Concerns About Trump

Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, along with other Democrats, has been vocal about their concerns regarding President Donald Trump, labeling him as a “threat to democracy.” They argue that Trump has led the nation into a “constitutional crisis,” while also advocating for changes to the Constitution itself to align with their views.

A recent piece in The New York Times posed a provocative question: “Why can’t the Left win without a new constitution?” The article suggested that some on the left are now considering drastic measures, like abolishing the Senate and the Electoral College, and packing the courts to serve their purposes. It seems there’s a growing sentiment that, perhaps, removing established democratic processes might somehow save democracy.

As one commentator noted, “They can’t win fair, and when they can’t win fair – we did. They say, ‘What do you know? I’ll take my balls and go home. We’ll just tear up the Constitution.’” This reflects a serious critique of the left’s approach, which, I think, may not resonate well with the wider public.

Interestingly, another article in The New York Times highlighted a “voter registration crisis” within the Democratic Party, revealing a significant loss of support. Between 2020 and 2024, the Democrats have struggled, seeing their standing decline in about 30 states. It begs the question, why are people moving away from the party? One commentator jokingly remarked, “Why doesn’t anyone want to vote for these crazy madmen?” It’s perhaps indicative of deeper issues within the party itself.

Some are speculating that many voters feel abandoned. “They may have left the party,” a commentator suggested, “or maybe the party has left them.” Being a Democrat, in this context, seems to require an acceptance of views that some might struggle to embrace.
