Federal Crime Crackdown in Washington D.C.

Amid heightened efforts from the Trump administration to combat federal crimes, a recent arrest in Washington D.C. involved a suspected member of the infamous MS-13 gang.

“Just yesterday, we rounded up 40 individuals and made 36 additional arrests related to illegal immigration, which included seizing five firearms from the streets along with suspected MS-13 gang members,” Attorney General Pam Bondi shared on social media Friday morning.

Bondi noted that this latest arrest raises the total to 719 since President Donald Trump initiated a push to involve federal authorities in local crime policing starting August 11. She expressed gratitude toward Trump for his “steady support in making D.C. safer.”

Military Involvement in Local Crime Prosecutions

In addition, around 800 National Guard members have joined numerous federal agents from organizations such as the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, ICE, and DEA to bolster security in the city.

On August 15, Bondi reported that the total number of arrests stood at 189. This implies that federal agents apprehended roughly 530 suspects in just the past week, averaging about 76 arrests per day.

The arrested suspect faces serious charges including murder, drug trafficking, illegal firearm possession, and child sex crimes.

Furthering their efforts, the Trump administration announced it would assign military lawyers to handle misdemeanor prosecutions.

General Counsel Involvement

A representative from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in D.C. confirmed that 20 military lawyers will assist with these cases. “The deployment of these lawyers highlights President Trump’s dedication to tackling crime and improving safety in the district,” stated U.S. Attorney Janine Piro.

Ongoing Investigations into Crime Statistics

The Department of Justice is also looking into irregularities concerning crime statistics after D.C. Police Commander Michael Puliam was suspended in mid-May for allegedly manipulating data within his jurisdiction.
