Former Aide to NYC Mayor Discusses Cash in Potato Chip Bag
A former aide to New York City Mayor Eric Adams has offered an unusual explanation regarding her decision to hand cash to reporters hidden in a potato chip bag, as reported by the New York Post.
Adams is currently seeking a second term, having faced competition from Democrat Congressman Zoran Mamdani, who secured the Democratic nomination for mayor on June 24, defeating notable opponents including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Winnie Greco filed a complaint after City Reporter Katie Hollan disclosed that the money was wrapped in an envelope inside the empty chip bag, which included a $100 invoice and several $20 invoices.

“I wasn’t sure how much money was in the envelope since it was meant as a birthday present, and it’s part of my Chinese culture,” Greco stated. “I really made a mistake, and I’m truly sorry. Please just speak to my lawyer,” she added.
In February 2024, the FBI raided Greco’s residence as part of a probe into Adams’ connections with the Turkish government. Adams faced charges in September 2024 for illegal campaign donations, bribery, and wire fraud.
The Trump administration later attempted to have the charges dropped, leading to several resignations from the U.S. Attorney’s office in the Southern District of New York, and ultimately, the charges were dismissed in April.
Greco also accused Hollan of trying to damage her reputation during an interview with the Post, stating, “If someone is out to hurt me because I care for my community and my family, there’s not much I can really say.”
