Roblox predator enticed 10-year-old girl with ‘Robux’ for inappropriate pictures: lawsuit

North Carolina Mother Sues Roblox Over Alleged Exploitation of Her Daughter

A mother from North Carolina has launched a lawsuit against Roblox, claiming the platform failed to protect her daughter from predators who allegedly exploited her through the popular gaming app.

The suit, filed in a North Carolina court, asserts that Roblox created an environment conducive to predatory behavior, despite its public assurances about child safety.

The mother, referred to in the suit as Jane Doe NL, claims her daughter experienced “unimaginable harm” after being groomed by another child on the platform. According to the complaint, the alleged predator offered Robux, Roblox’s virtual currency, to the young girl in exchange for sexually explicit images.

When the 10-year-old did not comply, the predator is said to have threatened to withdraw the Robux, as outlined in the legal document.

A spokesperson for Roblox has expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing that user safety is a top priority for the company.

Roblox’s business model revolves around selling Robux, which allows kids to customize their avatars and purchase in-game content. Children often discuss Robux with strangers, leading to potentially dangerous situations, according to the lawsuit.

The plaintiff, identified as a regular user of Roblox for several years, relied heavily on the app for entertainment and social interactions, thereby becoming a target for predators.

After establishing trust over time, the alleged predator escalated the grooming tactics, shifting the conversation from Roblox to private text messaging where the exploitation continued.

The lawsuit points out that Roblox’s sign-up process only requires a date of birth, a username, and a password—lacking stringent age verification measures that could prevent children from creating false accounts.

According to the filing, by November of last year, Roblox’s settings allowed adults to directly message children of any age.

The complaint also criticizes the current safety measures, highlighting the reliance on self-reported birthdates for age verification as insufficient.

The document states that had Roblox accurately conveyed the dangers present on the platform, the mother would have monitored her daughter’s usage more closely.

As a result of these events, the young victim is reportedly experiencing severe emotional distress and psychological trauma, which the lawsuit claims are “serious, continuous, and permanent.”

Roblox, which became incredibly popular among children during the pandemic, has approximately 68.5 million active users daily, with a significant proportion under the age of 13.

Even though the platform is marketed as a safe space for kids and teens, the lawsuit suggests that user growth appears to take precedence over child safety measures.

A Roblox spokesperson acknowledged the system isn’t perfect but mentioned the strict protections in place, including limitations on sharing personal information and banning inappropriate conversations.

Roblox has also pledged to work with law enforcement and child safety organizations to combat exploitation.

While Roblox executives have repeatedly assured parents about the platform’s safety, some past statements seem contradictory. A vice president acknowledged a lack of digital courtesy on Roblox a few years prior.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and aims to take a stand against what it describes as Roblox’s systemic failures in protecting vulnerable users in pursuit of profits.

Matthew Dolman, a lawyer representing the plaintiffs, described the case as a “horrifying reminder” of prioritizing corporate interests over child safety, stating, “Children are suffering unimaginably.”
