A tragic incident unfolded in Denham Springs, Louisiana, when a 15-year-old boy lost his life while biking, allegedly struck by a vehicle driven by an undocumented individual suspected of intoxication.
On Thursday evening, 31-year-old Juan Alfredo Chavaria reportedly hit the teenager with his car and fled the scene. He was later apprehended by authorities.
“The young man was riding his bike when he was struck by a driver. We’ve determined that the driver’s blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit,” remarked Sheriff Jason Ard.
“The driver is an undocumented immigrant, a Hispanic man. Additionally, he’s currently under ICE custody. He faces several charges, including vehicular homicide, reckless operation of a vehicle, and a first DWI violation,” the sheriff added.
According to Sheriff Ard, the incident occurred around 7 PM, and the sunlight was still bright at that time. He noted that the driver’s high alcohol levels contributed significantly to the tragedy.
The charges against Chavaria include:
- Vehicular homicide
- First DWI violation
- Reckless operation of a vehicle
- Possession of alcohol in a vehicle
- Operating without a driver’s license
- ICE detainer, indicating a request for extended custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement
Chavaria is currently held at the Livingston Parish Detention Center as the investigation continues. The victim’s identity remains confidential due to his status as a minor.
