Donald McPherson, Last American WWII Ace Pilot, Dies at 103
Donald McPherson, a World War II veteran, passed away in Nebraska at the age of 103. He was recognized as the last surviving “Ace” pilot from that conflict.
Serving as a naval fighter pilot for the F6F Hellcat on the USS Essex in the Pacific, McPherson shot down the minimum number of enemy planes to earn the title of “ace” pilot.
Reports from the Associated Press state that both the American Fighter Aces Association and the Fagen Fighters WWII Museum acknowledge McPherson as the final American ace pilot to have lived after the war.
His wartime contributions earned him a Congressional Gold Medal, an honor awarded to those who significantly influenced the history and culture of the United States.
McPherson’s daughter, Beth DeLaval, shared insights about her father, saying, “When it’s all done and Dad lists things he wants to remember… His first thing is that he’s a man of faith.” His passing was first reported on August 14th.
McPherson joined the Navy at 18 in 1942 and married Thelma two years later, after completing his flight training.
Reflecting on his experiences during the war, McPherson’s daughter, Donna Mulder, noted that her father sometimes felt that “probably God is not with me.” Such thoughts must have haunted him while serving in such a perilous environment.
Following the war, he returned to Adams, Nebraska, working as a letter carrier. He played an active role in the community, helping to establish youth baseball and softball leagues and serving as a scoutmaster, among other leadership positions.
In recognition of his contributions, the local ballpark was named “McPherson Field.” He leaves behind his daughter Beth, son Donna, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
