Two Unremarkable Hardware Stores Were Shields for Stolen Goods

Authorities revealed this week that two hardware stores near Los Angeles were actually fronts for extensive cargo theft operations, stealing products from trains, trucks, and container ships.

In law enforcement lingo, a “fence” refers to someone who deals in stolen goods, acting as a go-between for thieves and buyers to obscure the origins of the stolen items.

According to reports:

Police Chief Jim McDonnell announced on Wednesday that a significant cargo theft operation had been dismantled at DJ General Tool & Wire’s locations in Montebello and Huntington Park. The stolen products included power tools, e-bikes, and appliances from well-known brands like Dyson, Milwaukee, Dewalt, and Makita.

Dojon Park, 41, the owner of the store, has been taken into custody on suspicions of handling stolen property, with plans from the LA County District Attorney’s Office to file a significant claim.

District Attorney Nathan Hochman mentioned that they are currently assessing the extent of the crimes committed and anticipate bringing charges against Park.

The investigation has garnered additional support from the Federal Pacific Police Department and the Port of Los Angeles Police Department, according to officials.

Authorities indicate that further arrests are likely related to this hardware operation.

This incident highlights ongoing law enforcement efforts to combat cargo theft, a growing concern affecting Los Angeles’ transportation hubs in recent years.

The Port of Los Angeles, one of the busiest ports globally, has consistently ranked as the top container port in the U.S. since 2000.

This year, the LAPD reportedly recovered about $4 million in cargo linked to another organized crime group.

McDonnell emphasized that the implications of cargo theft extend beyond the manufacturers involved.

“It’s essential to understand that cargo theft is not just a casualty crime,” he noted. “It impacts retailers, distributors, and ultimately, all of us. Ensuring the integrity of our supply chain is vital for both public safety and the economic stability of Los Angeles.”
