Sen. Ted Cruz Supports Rep. Chip Roy in the 2026 Texas Attorney General Election

Sen. Ted Cruz Endorses Chip Roy for Texas Attorney General

During a campaign appearance on Saturday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) officially endorsed Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) in the race for Texas Attorney General. Cruz referred to Roy, his former chief of staff and longtime ally, as a “combat-tested warrior” and a “fierce advocate of the constitution.” He expressed confidence in the candidates competing for the position, stating they are all friends and strong supporters of his. Cruz acknowledged, “Texas is fortunate to have such a wealth of strong conservatives stepping up to lead.”

“I’m proud to back Texas Attorney General Chip Roy. Having been my Chief of Staff, Chip has been a close friend and ally for over a decade now,” Cruz noted.

He praised Roy for his two decades of dedication to Texas, asserting that Roy has consistently shown courage, integrity, and a strong commitment to protecting the state. “Chip is a battle-tested warrior and a fierce defender of the constitution. He upholds the rule of law, safeguards Texan rights, and stands against those who intimidate Texas leaders. I truly believe he will fight for our state,” Cruz added.

Earlier this week, Roy announced his candidacy for the 2026 Attorney General position, a seat that is being opened for the first time since 2014. Current Attorney General Ken Paxton is seeking a new role after challenging Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) for the US Senate Republican nomination.

Representing Texas’ 21st Congressional District for four terms, Roy has committed to defending what he describes as the state’s “legacy of freedom and security” by emphasizing border security, law enforcement support, election integrity, and minimizing foreign influence. He noted that his decision to run was influenced by a desire to “go home” after his time in Washington.

“It was an honor to represent Texas’ 21st District and to be part of this incredible state within the greatest country in the world. However, representatives shouldn’t serve indefinitely,” Roy remarked.

Roy’s background includes serving as a federal prosecutor, the first attorney general under Ken Paxton, Cruz’s chief of staff, a senior lawyer for Gov. Rick Perry, and staff director for the Senate Judiciary Committee. He currently serves on the Rules, Budget, and Judiciary Committees, chairs the Constitutional Subcommittee, and is a member of the House Freedom Conference.

Other Republicans running for the position include state Senators Maze Middleton and Joan Huffman, as well as former Trump administration official Aaron Wrights, who previously worked for Paxton.
