Jerry Adler Passes Away at 96

Jerry Adler, recognized for his roles in “The Sopranos” and “The Good Wife,” has died at the age of 96. A family representative noted he “died after losing his sleep.”

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Adler’s acting career didn’t begin until later in life. Before hitting the screen, he gained experience as a stage manager, producer, and director on Broadway.

He was involved in the original production of “My Fair Lady” but relocated to California in the 1980s, where he shifted his focus to television, including a role in the soap opera “Santa Barbara.”

Reflecting on his journey, Adler once mentioned, “I was in Twilight, a really mediocre career,” in an interview with the New York Times in 1992.

Throughout the 90s, Adler appeared in various television series and films, such as “Brooklyn Bridge,” “Alright Already,” and “Manhattan Murder Mystery.” His breakthrough came when casting director Donna Isaacson encouraged him to audition for a film called “The Public Eye,” in which he starred alongside Joe Pesci. This opened doors for him.

After appearing in “Northern Exposure,” which had ties to “The Sopranos” creator David Chase, Adler earned a prominent role as Hesh Rabkin on the acclaimed series, appearing for six seasons. He recalled that his role was initially intended to be a guest spot, but audience interest led to his character returning regularly.

Post-“Sopranos,” he continued to shine, taking on the character of Howard Lyman in “The Good Wife,” starring alongside Julianna Margulies.

Following news of his passing, his friend Frank J. Reilly shared a heartfelt tribute, celebrating Adler’s achievements. “The great actor, my friend Jerry Adler, passed away today at the age of 96,” Reilly wrote, acknowledging that Adler’s career began later than most. “Not bad for a man who didn’t start acting until he was 65.”

Adler leaves behind his four daughters.
