Hakeem Jeffries Responds to Texas Redistricting
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries from New York has found himself facing questions about potential Democratic responses in New York after criticizing Texas Republicans for their new Congressional map. This conversation came up during an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, who pointed out the apparent contradiction given New York’s redistricting history.
After Jeffries condemned the Texas map, Bash asked if there were plans to address the issue in his own state. Jeffries mentioned that Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul was exploring possibilities. Bash reminded him that Jeffries had previously supported a New York redistricting effort led by an Independent Committee in 2022.
Bash noted, “You praised the New York state legislature for redrawing a new one. But isn’t it hypocritical to criticize Texas given your involvement?”
In response, Jeffries pointed out, “Well, it’s crucial to recognize that in New York, the map wasn’t drawn by an independent body but rather by a special master appointed by a conservative judge.” He emphasized that New York had to reject the maps created by the Bipartisan Independent Redemption Committee before the last midterm elections.
New York’s Democratic Congress has since filed a lawsuit to claim authority over redrawing the state maps for the coming decade. Last year, the Court of Appeals ruled in their favor, allowing new maps to be implemented in 2024.
Jeffries clarified, “In New York, the maps were adopted on a bipartisan basis, which is not the case in Texas. There, it appears to be a partisan jerrymander influenced by Donald Trump to skew the midterm elections.”
While Jeffries has lent his support to other state Democrats aiming to redraw Congressional maps in reaction to Texas’s actions, Bash pressed him on whether a swift redraw in New York would be feasible.
Jeffries stated, “Texas has acted to manipulate the districting process to sway several seats toward the Republicans. We know the current Republican majority is quite slim.”
He then praised California for its strong response to the Texas Republicans, although he didn’t specify concrete actions for New York.
As Bash pressed for clarification on New York’s plans, Jeffries said, “There are responses being considered as we monitor the situation in New York and across the country.”
