Unique Experience Awaits in Las Vegas
There’s something special about a sphere.
The Las Vegas residency featuring “The Wizard of Oz” kicks off on Thursday, August 28. This event not only revitalizes the beloved 1939 film on a grand scale but also showcases it on the world’s highest resolution screen, which spans an impressive 160,000 square feet.
With 1,568 crystal-clear speakers, attendees can expect an immersive experience that’s, well, magical. “It’s an experience,” remarked James Dolan, CEO of Madison Square Garden.
Dolan has turned a personal passion project, estimated at $2.3 million, into a multi-sensory spectacle, blending the iconic tales of Dorothy with innovative technology.
“We’ve got all the senses engaged, except taste and smell,” Dolan noted, mentioning tickets priced around $104 or less, aimed at fully immersing viewers in the film’s world.
Expect to feel the action—literally. “You’ll feel the wind from the tornado,” he explained, referencing gusts created by powerful fans that can generate real fog effects.
Added to that, the seating offers a tactile experience, synchronized with the show’s movements to enhance the immersion. “There are some parts that will really blow your mind,” Dolan enthused.
Following the Path to Adventure
The rights to this adaptation came about easily, according to producer Jane Rosenthal, who pitched the idea to Dolan as a follow-up to previous successful residencies. She felt the film’s legacy would resonate well with modern audiences captivated by technological advancements in cinema.
To elevate the theatrical experience, Dolan enlisted Ben Grossman, an Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor. However, transforming an almost century-old film into a state-of-the-art spectacle with elements like real fire and flying monkeys wasn’t without its challenges.
Reflecting on the process, Grossman stated it was rare to embark on a project aware of potential roadblocks. “You just keep pushing until there’s nothing left to push,” he remarked.
Innovative Challenges
There were moments when the project felt as though it had hit a wall. After extensive testing, the team realized that their prototype wasn’t functioning as intended. “We thought we knew classic Hollywood inside out,” Grossman laughed, recalling the disheartening moments of initial failure.
A key turning point came from a breakthrough with AI technology, which helped them realize their vision. “We combined different approaches and suddenly it clicked. It was like, ‘Wow, this is what we’ve been trying to achieve,’” Grossman recounted.
This constant evolution persisted right up to the premiere of the experience.
Staying True to the Heart of Oz
As they reinvent the classic experience, the team is committed to honoring the film’s legacy. “Everything was crafted with great care,” Rosenthal commented, delving into Warner Bros. Archives to capture the original spirit of the 1939 film.
Dolan shared that one of his favorite moments is set in the enchanting sky above Emerald City, revealing a playful yet darker twist in the story as they decided to stick with the original dialogue, which has a touch more edge.
He promised that audiences would experience richer soundscapes, revitalizing iconic scores and sound effects that may have been lost over time. “I was moved to tears the first time I heard it—it’s that beautiful,” Dolan expressed.
Excitement Builds for the Premiere
With the premiere just around the corner, 120,000 tickets are available, and the show has even attracted guests like the daughter of Judy Garland, who played Dorothy.
Some early critics have voiced concerns, suggesting that the adaptation might stray too far due to its AI components, but Grossman views the reactions with a sense of humor. “It’s fascinating what people say about things they haven’t viewed,” he remarked.
Defending the authenticity of the project, he claimed, “The sky visuals? They’re real. We captured them using top-notch equipment in Kansas during different weather conditions.”
When it came to runtime, Dolan assured audiences that everything they loved about the original film remains intact, even if some extra moments were trimmed for a tighter narrative.
Looking Ahead
In conversations about future projects, excitement is already brewing around the upcoming album “Life of a Showgirl,” set for release on October 3. There’s also talk of the Backstreet Boys coming back, followed by other high-profile attractions.
Dolan hinted at plans for a replica of the sphere in Abu Dhabi, a first step toward a larger network of venues. “By the end of this year, we hope to confirm additional locations in the U.S.,” he teased.
