University of South Carolina Issues “All Clear” After False Shooter Reports
The University of South Carolina declared an “All Clear” on Sunday evening following warnings about potential active shooters on campus. According to officials, there are currently no ongoing emergencies.
Earlier that evening, the university had instructed students and staff on the Columbia campus to evacuate to a designated location after reports surfaced regarding an active shooter near the Thomas Cooper Library. Despite the reports, authorities confirmed that no actual shooting occurred, and the library remains closed.
Alerts were sent out around 6:30 PM, advising individuals to steer clear of the area if possible and either evacuate or secure themselves inside buildings. Fortunately, no evidence of an active shooter was found. The deputy police chief, Scott Plill, dispelled concerns by clarifying that a person reported with an object resembling a rifle was actually holding an umbrella.
All clear signals were given after 8 PM on Sunday. Just last week, Villanova University experienced a similar scare during freshman orientation, which led to lockdowns as parents were saying goodbye to their children. Villanova’s president labeled that incident a “cruel hoax,” affirming that there were no shooters or injuries reported during that time.
While such incidents can evoke panic, it’s crucial to remember that not all reports indicate real threats. The precautions taken in these situations, though perhaps disruptive, aim to protect everyone involved.
